Autonomy in Learning and Core Competencies

You have made some very interesting comments about your learning environment.  While some comments are similar, ie. quiet and focused room or alternatively, a social learning space,  every student is unique. As we move away from a learning model that has come out of the industrial revolution and creates an atmosphere that mimics factory conditions, it is important to for students to formulate ideas around their own learning.  Read the core competencies from the new curriculum model:

Thinking - The thinking competency encompasses the knowledge, skills and processes we associate with intellectual development. It is through their competency as thinkers that students take subject-specific concepts and content and transform them into a new understanding. Thinking competence includes specific thinking skills as well as habits of mind, and metacognitive awareness.

Personal and Social - Personal and social competency is the set of abilities that relate to students' identity in the world, both as individuals and as members of their community and society. Personal and social competency encompasses the abilities students need to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.

My questions for you:

What is the difference between teacher led learning and student led learning. In other words, when do teachers need to direct your learning and when can students direct learning?
Teacher led:
Student led:

How can we create an environment that is student led?

List the criteria of a student led learning environment. In other words, what do students need to be strong independent learners and what would that look like?  List at least three points.

List learning activities that are best led by teachers and best led by students. List at least three points each.

Be ready to brainstorm in pairs, and tonight please reflect on these questions and be ready to report back tomorrow.
